What is a geomembrane

Geomembrane is a thin film material used in civil engineering and environmental engineering, usually made of high molecular polymers, such as polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), etc.

It has the functions of waterproof, barrier, isolation, reinforcement, etc., and is mainly used in the following fields:

Waterproof engineering: Geomembrane can be used for the waterproof layer of various pools, reservoirs, anti-seepage walls, tunnels and underground works to prevent water penetration and protect soil structures.

Foundation isolation: Geomembranes can isolate particles, moisture and chemicals between different soil layers and different materials, prevent them from infiltrating and mixing with each other, and reduce foundation deformation and settlement.

Landfills: Geomembranes can be used on the bottom and sides of landfills to form an impermeable membrane to prevent harmful substances in waste from seeping into groundwater or soil and protect the environment.

River embankment and coastal protection: Geomembrane can be used for wave prevention, anti-corrosion, reinforcement and protective layer in river embankment and coastal engineering, protecting soil slopes from water flow, waves and erosion.

Road and railway engineering: Geomembrane can be used as a method of soft soil foundation treatment to improve the bearing capacity and stability of roads and railways by enhancing the compressive and shear strength of the soil.

The difference between hdpe geomembrane and pvc geomembrane

HDPE geomembrane (High-Density Polyethylene) and PVC geomembrane (Polyvinyl Chloride) are two common geomembrane materials, and they have some differences in performance and application.

Material properties: HDPE geomembrane is made of high-density polyethylene, while PVC geomembrane is made of polyvinyl chloride. HDPE geomembrane has high strength and durability, can withstand large load and stress, and has good chemical corrosion resistance. PVC geomembrane is softer and more malleable than HDPE, suitable for applications that require high flexibility and adaptability.

Bearing capacity: Due to the higher strength and rigidity of HDPE geomembrane, it performs better under heavy load and greater stress. This makes HDPE geomembrane suitable for engineering projects that require higher strength and durability, such as soil covering, embankment reinforcement, etc. PVC geomembrane is relatively weak in terms of bearing capacity, and is more suitable for use in relatively light and small load scenarios.

Chemical corrosion resistance: HDPE geomembrane is superior in chemical corrosion performance and less sensitive to acid, alkali, salt and other chemical substances, so it is suitable for chemical plants, landfills and other environments that require chemical corrosion resistance. However, PVC geomembrane has weak resistance to some chemical substances, so special attention should be paid to the use in places where it may be exposed to corrosive substances.

Construction and installation: PVC geomembrane is more flexible and easy to bend, can adapt to irregular shapes more easily, and is more convenient for construction and installation. In contrast, HDPE geomembrane is relatively rigid and should be connected with appropriate welding technology, and the construction is more complicated.

Cost: In general, the cost of PVC geomembranes is relatively low, while the cost of HDPE geomembranes is relatively high. When selecting a geomembrane, factors such as required performance, engineering project requirements, and budget need to be considered comprehensively.

In general, HDPE geomembranes are suitable for projects that require higher strength, durability, and chemical corrosion performance, while PVC geomembranes are suitable for applications that require higher flexibility and ease of installation. According to the specific project needs, it is very important to choose the appropriate geomembrane material.
