Maintenance Methods for Geotextiles

Geotextile is a special material used in civil engineering, featuring good tensile strength and waterproof performance. To ensure its long-term effectiveness, proper maintenance methods are of crucial importance. Here are some effective maintenance approaches for geotextiles:

I. Pre-use Preparations

1. Surface Cleaning: Before use, carefully inspect the surface of the geotextile for dust, gravel, or other debris. Keep the surface clean to prevent damage and contamination.

2. Quality Inspection: Ensure the integrity and quality of the geotextile. Especially when covering sharp areas such as thresholds, walls, and steps, use geotextiles of appropriate thickness and quality to prevent wear and tear.

II. Precautions During Use

1. Full Coverage: Make sure that the geotextile fully covers the area and fits snugly against the contact surface to ensure its effectiveness.

2. Avoid Sharp Objects: During the laying and use process, refrain from using brushes or other sharp objects to prevent damage to the geotextile.

3. Regular Inspection: Periodically check the condition of the geotextile during use to promptly identify and address any damage or wear.

III. Post-use Cleaning and Maintenance

1. Prompt Cleaning: After use, clean the geotextile promptly to avoid the accumulation of mud and dirt, which could affect its performance in subsequent uses.

2. Use Neutral Detergent: When cleaning, use a neutral detergent and wash with running water. Do not use brushes or other sharp objects.

3. Dry Storage: After cleaning, thoroughly dry the geotextile and store it in a dry and well-ventilated place to prevent moisture and deformation.

IV. Maintenance in Special Environments

1. Adapt to Environmental Changes: When the usage environment changes, such as an increase or decrease in soil moisture, take corresponding maintenance measures to extend the service life of the geotextile and enhance its performance.

2. Regular Maintenance: For geotextiles used in environmental protection, waterproofing, sand prevention, and other applications, regular maintenance can effectively prolong their service life.

V. Maintenance of Professional Equipment

1. Instrument Upkeep: If professional equipment such as a geotextile thickness gauge is used for testing, regular maintenance is also required to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the instrument.

2. Follow Standards: When using the instrument, adhere to relevant test standards, such as GB/T13761, JTG E50, and ISO 9863, to ensure the accuracy of the test results.

By following these methods, the service life of geotextiles can be effectively extended, ensuring their performance and effectiveness in various application scenarios.
